Estate Planning and Planned Gifts
Estate Planning for Those Concerned About Alzheimer's Disease
For those of you who want the ravages of Alzheimer's disease ended, it is important to plan now. A carefully drafted estate plan will make certain that your charitable wishes are fulfilled, while minimizing the tax consequences to your family. If you have questions or would like to speak to someone in our office please email us at: TXchapterinfo@alz.org Ways to Make a Gift Through Your Estate Plan.
There are many ways to make a charitable gift to the Alzheimer's Association of Travis County through your estate plan. An estate plan consists of documents that direct those who survive you to distribute your assets according to your wishes. Estate planning documents include wills, living trusts, life insurance policies, and retirement plans, to name a few. A planned gift is a gift made through your estate plan.
If you die without an estate plan, the state where you live will decide where your assets will go. The government will probably not distribute your assets the way you would have desired. Much of your estate may go to the government in taxes, and none will go to support the work of the Alzheimer's Association in fighting this debilitating disease.
Your Will
Your will is a document that tells your survivors how you would like your estate distributed after your death. One of the simplest and most effective planned gifts is a bequest, or a gift made by a clause in your will.
There are several types of bequests.
A specific bequest gives a certain amount of money or a certain piece of property to a person or an organization, known as the beneficiary. A percentage bequest gives a certain percentage of the value of your entire estate to a beneficiary. A residual bequest is made when all other bequests and costs to the estate are satisfied. When you make a bequest to the Alzheimer's Association of Travis County, your estate may also have the benefit of a federal estate tax charitable deduction.
